Listen to the Voice of Your Community!  A Lesson in Listening

Some years ago a client commented that community consultations were just an annoying box to check off, that it was just an unnecessary hassle that would just slow everything down.  Well, was he wrong! The project was supposed to revitalise a run-down area with new housing, retail, parks and more. Their company had a grand vision but only put out some public notices.  An uproar instantly erupted as residents felt astounded by the level of disruption, businesses faced road closures, and environmental groups were concerned.  Protests stalled work for months, with legal challenges, and a total public relations nightmare for the company as an angry divided community emerged.

Listening through meaningful community consultations from the start could have raised the issues beforehand, and got residents’ support and buy-in. Maybe it would have involved some adjustments, but in the end, the developers created fierce opposition making it very difficult to get the project off the ground.

Those consultations are valuable opportunities to collaborate with the public and minimise conflicts by making decisions together.

Community consultations can take various forms such as public meetings, workshops, surveys, online forums, and opportunities to submit written feedback.  The goal is to gather diverse perspectives, concerns, ideas, and local knowledge from those who have a stake in the issue before any final decisions are made. It helps ensure that decisions reflect the needs and values of the community and increases the probability of their support.  Community consultations benefit both sides:

While community consultations require dedicating time and resources upfront, the benefits of making better decisions that serve the public interest make it worth the investment. True community consultations, done genuinely and inclusively, are an essential part of good governance, corporate social responsibility, and ethical decision-making.
